Getting Connected to kay-net Using Windows 95/98 and Internet Explorer:

Manual Setup (Note: It’s easier to use the Internet Connection Wizard. See the directions at this link: ICWizard.htm

Requirements: Computer with Windows 95/98, Internet Explorer, modem, phone line.  You might also need your Windows 95 / 98 CD (or disks)

 

1. Make sure the Dial-Up Adapter and TCP/IP are installed:

 

1A. At the Windows Desktop, look at the Network properties box (shown below) by using the following mouse clicks:

Start – Settings – Control Panel – Network (double click)

 

1B. Check the list of items to see if Dial-Up Adapter and TCP/IP are there:

 

 

Dial-Up Adapter and TCP/IP don’t have to appear exactly as shown above.

Just make sure they’re both in the list.

 

1C. If both of these items are present, click Cancel and go to step 3.

 

1D. If one or both items are missing, click the Add button and go to step 2.

       

 

2. To install the Dial-Up Adapter and/or TCP/IP, follow these instructions:

2A. At this point you should see the Select Network Component Type dialog box as shown below:

 

 

Dial-Up Adapter: (If this is already installed, go to step 2C)

2B. Select "Adapter" from the Select Network Component Type box in step 2A, then click Add. The Select Network Adapter box shown below should appear:

From the list of Manufacturers, select "Microsoft"; from Network Adapters, select "Dial-Up Adapter". Click OK. This will take you back to the Network dialog box (from Step 1). If you need to add TCP/IP, click Add and resume at step 2C. Otherwise, go to Step 2D.

 

TCP/IP:

2C. Select "Protocol" from the Select Network Component Type box in Step 2A and click Add. The Select Network Protocol box shown below should appear:

From the list of Manufacturers, select "Microsoft"; from Network Protocols, select   "TCP/IP". Click OK.  This will take you back to the Network dialog box.

2D. At the Network dialog box, click OK. You will need to reboot (and may need to insert your Windows CD) before continuing to Step 3.

 

3. Set up the Connection:

3A. Double click the My Computer icon on your Desktop.

3B. Double click Dial-Up Networking.

3C. Double click the Make A New Connection icon

            OR

If you see a dialog box called "Welcome to Dial-Up Networking", click Next.

 

3D. You should see the screen shown above. Where you are asked to type a name, enter: kay-net

3E. Select your modem if it’s not already selected.

3F. Click Next.

 

3G. Enter the area code and telephone number from the list of dial-up sites. 

3H. Click Next

3I. Click Finish

 

4. Set up TCP/IP:

4A. Select the kay-net icon you created in step 3 (don’t double click it, just highlight it).

4B. Go to the File menu, and select Properties.

4C. The kay-net properties box will appear. Select the "Server Types" tab at the top.  You should see the screen shown below: 

4D. Set up your screen so that the settings match the screen shown above, then Click the TCP/IP Settings button.  You'll see the following screen:

4E. Set up the TCP/IP Settings so that your screen matches the screen above.  The Primary DNS Server is: 204.178.185.5 ; the Secondary DNS Server is: 204.178.185.105  Double check these numbers because it’s easy to make a mistake here.

4F. Click OK. This will take you back to the kay-net dialog box.

4G. From the kay-net dialog box, select the Scripting tab.

 

4H. Make sure that "Start terminal screen minimized" box is checked.

4I.  Click OK

 

 

5. Set up the Dial-Up screen:

5A. Double Click the kay-net icon you created in step 3.   You'll see the Connect To kay-net screen shown below:

5B. Enter the Dial-Up User name that was provided in your Intro letter (Note: this is not your e-mail name).

5C. Enter the Dial-up User password provided in the Intro letter

Note: If you do not have an Intro letter or do not know your Dial-up User name and password, call 760-876-8518 and we will immediately mail this info to your billing address.

 

5D. Choose a Save Password option:

    Save Password checkbox:

    Checked = Your login password will automatically be entered when you dial in to the Internet.

    Unchecked = You must enter your login password each time you dial in.

 

5E. Click Connect.

When the connection is completed, the dial-up process will minimize into a little connection icon in the lower right corner. This means that the dial up is complete. You could now run Internet Explorer (or other Web Browser) to access the Internet. To disconnect from kay-net, double click the connection icon in the lower right corner, then click Disconnect.

To set up Internet Explorer to automatically dial up the Internet connection for you, go to the next step.

 

6. Set up Internet Explorer:

6A. At the Windows Desktop, access Internet Properties by using the following series of mouse clicks:

Start – Settings – Control Panel – Internet (double click)

6B. You should see the Internet Properties dialog box shown below. Select the Connection tab.

6C. Select "Connect to the Internet using a modem", then click the Settings button.

 

6D. You should see the screen shown above.  From the drop down list, select the kay-net connection you made in Step 3. 

The User login name should already be here (this is not your e-mail name). If your login name is not here, make sure that step 5 has been completed.

The password appears as stars if you checked the "Save Password" box in Step 5

 

6E. Click OK to close Dial-Up Settings

 

6F. Click OK to close Internet Properties

 

If you are already running Internet Explorer, you’ll have to exit and restart it.
